State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid has urged the researchers to come up with new ideas to get the renewable energy solutions at an affordable price, especially for solar home systems.

“This has been the main challenge for Bangladesh – to get the renewable energy like solar systems at affordable price,” he told the inaugural function of the 4th International Conference on the Developments in Renewable Energy Technology (ICDRET 2016), organized by United International University (UIU) at its Dhanmondi campus in the capital on Thursday.

The ICDRET was also addressed, among others, by UIU’s Board of Trustee’s vice-chairman Faridur Rahman Khan, UIU vice-chancellor Prof M Rezwan Khan, Prof Dr. Siddique Lutful Kabir of UIU and Prof Sadrul Islam of Islamic University of Technology.

Researchers and scholars from different countries are attending the 3-day conference. A total of 148 research papers were submitted by students and researchers from different local and foreign universities on renewable energy developments. These will be discussed in 10 separate sessions at the conference.

In the conference, Nasrul Hamid said the government has planned to increase renewable energy’s share by 10 percent in the total generation. Rural people are installing the rooftop solar home systems to meet their demand.

But urban people are opposing this solar system. So it needs motivation considering the future of next generation as Bangladesh is badly affected country by climate change, he said.

Emphasising on the development of human resources, he said the government plans to generate 24,000 MW of electricity by 2021. The country will see $13-14 billion investment in next 5 years in the power sector. But development of human resource has been the main challenge for the country as it lacks skilled manpower.

He pointed out that 2000 people are generating 5000 MW in private sector power plants while PDB in public sector generates the same amount of electricity with a workforce of 19,000.
