The government has undertaken mega projects and prepared a roadmap to generate 19,000 megawatt (MW) electricity from coal-fired power plants by 2030.

“We have already undertaken eight mega projects for generating 9,960-MW electricity from coal-based power plants across the country,” State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told BSS.

He said the government has already undertaken some projects to generate 17,343 MW electricity more by 2021 and signed 77 agreements aimed at producing 11,408 MW power.

Considering the fuel diversification issue, the Power System Master Plan (PSMP), the government aims to acquire the fuel composition ratio would be coal 50 percent, natural gas 25 percent, 5 percent liquid fuel and 20 percent nuclear including renewable and cross-border trade, thus prioritizes the use of domestic primary energy sources, he said.

Nasrul said the power system has been expanded to keep pace with the fast growing demand while the power generation capacity in the country now stands at 14,077 MW.

“The government has also given emphasis on renewable energy. We have planned to produce 800 MW electricity from renewable energy within 2015,” he added.

Talking to BSS Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division Abu Bakar Siddique said that the government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country.

“Currently 75 percent people are enjoying electricity access and there is target to bring all citizens under power access by 2021. The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly with full commitment of connecting every house with power supply network throughout the country very soon,” he said.

According to a ministry official, under the government’s power sector roadmap, the country will generate around 19,000 MW of electricity from coal-based power plants by 2030. Of this, 11,250 MW would be generated using domestic coal while the rest from imported coal.

The official said the government signed separate memorandums of understanding for generating coal-fired electricity. The under construction plants are: Moitree Super Thermal Power Plant at Rampal, Bagerhat having capacity of generating 1,320 MW, Ultra Super Critical Power Plant at Matarbari, Cox’s Bazar of 1,200 MW, a joint venture power plant of Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Singapore at Moheshkhali of 1,200 MW, Moheshkhali Power Plant in Cox’s Bazar for 1,320 MW, BPDB and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia joint venture Power Plant at Moheshkhali of 1,200 MW, BPDB and China Hudian Hong Kong (CHDHK) at Moheshkhali of 1,200 MW, BPDB and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) at Moheshkhali of 1,200 MW and Bangladeshi state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Limited and Chinese Power Company CMC at Payra in Patuakhali of 1,320 MW.

He said the government increased the number of power plants, transmission lines and distribution lines, while the system losses have been significantly reduced.

Meanwhile, the demand for power connections had increased in rural areas across the country because of significant business activities visible there. A large- scale small business units had been set up in rural areas in last couple of years and mud houses turned into buildings.
