2D Survey In The Bay Of Bangle; Expert Demands For 3D

Mohiuddin Miah

State-owned oil and gas exploration company Petrobangla is going to float re-tender for 2D survey in the Bay of Bengalfor assessing gas reserves. The company already has started the process for tendering. The decision has been taken in a recent meeting of the taskforce at Energy Division office.

energy experts differed with the governments move for conducting the 2D survey only.
Prof M Tamim, a noted energy expert of the country, said, none can assess gas reserves by conducting a 2D survey. The government should collect all data about the oil and gas blocks by conducting both 2D and 3D surveys. Tamim added, if the government contains data it can negotiate with the international oil companies ( IOCs)  prudently. Since the government has no data about the block OICs took the decision as per their wish.

Meanwhile, said a director of Petrobangla said that it had already sent a proposal to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources about its plan for the 2D survey. In the sea about 20 thousand meter will be under 2D survey. A contract will be signed with a foreign company for ten years to extract gas and oil.

Petrobangla wants to conduct the survey for collecting data about possible gas reserves so that it can negotiate properly with the bidders.

Earlier in 2011, a contract was signed between ConocoPhillips and Petrobangla to explore two offshore blocks under a Production Sharing Contract (PSC).

On February 17, 2014 Bangladesh signed two deals with India’s state-owned ONGC Videsh Limited and Oil India Limited to commence oil and gas exploration in two offshore shallow blocks, block 4 and block 9, in the Bay of Bengal
