7 More Upazillas To Be 100% Electrified In This Month

Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB or REB) has a plan to
ensure electricity in 465 Upazillas within the year of 2018. Keeping
this vision in mind, the REB is now looking forward to making 7 more
Upazillas 100 percent electrified within this September as it has just
finished 100 percent electrification of 6 other Upazillas in the last
month.

The name of the Upazillas are not confirmed to the press yet. Earlier,
the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the 100 percent
electrification of the 6 Upazillas on 13th August, this year through a
video conference. A total number of 2 lac 38 thousand 650 subscribers
were brought under electrification then.

According to the sources from the REB, the board has a plan to
electrify 22 more Upazillas within December, 20 more by March 2017 and
70 more again by June, 2017. It suggests that, a total number of 119
Upazillas will be thoroughly electrified within the midst of 2017.
Thus, the 465 Upazillas will be under complete electrification service
by the year of 2018, claims the REB sources.

Meanwhile, a conference was arranged at the REB head office in the
city on 1st September, where General Managers of all 78 Palli Bidyut
Samities (PBS) participated. REB chairman Moeen Uddin Khan, said that
REB has already connected 1 crore 58 lacs subscribers, among them 84
lacs were provided with electricity within the 7 year tenure of the
current government. He remarked it as a great achievement of the
country.

REB sources informed, within the Fiscal Year of 2015-16 it has given
connections to 37 lacs new subscribers. To connect such large chunk of
subscribers, 32 thousands Km of transmission line was built. REB
scheduled 30 lacs connections to be implemented within this FY of
2016-17. The board also planned to build 35 thousands Km of new
transmission line to feed its new subscribers in the current FY and to
install 11 thousand prepaid meters while also intended to keep the
system loss below 11.50 percent margin.
