Chevron Bangladesh Holds Two Eye-Camps

Chevron Bangladesh held two day-long eye-camps for underprivileged community members living near its Bibiyana and Moulavi Bazar gas plants. The eye-camps were organized in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Jalalabad. Held at the premises of two local high-schools in Nabiganj and Srimangal Upazilas, both events were widely attended, with nearly 2,000 people eager to take advantage of free ophthalmic consultation and treatment. Following initial examination at the eye-camps, Chevron sponsored the cataract-removal surgeries of 170 patients at Modern Eye Hospital. Aside from the cost of the surgeries and patients’ room & board at the hospital, Chevron also bore the costs of a caretaker for each patient during his/her hospital stay, and two-way transport.

Medical teams at the camps provided counselling, vitamins and eye-drops as required. 333 people also received refraction-support in the form of spectacles. The Bibiyana and Moulavibazar eye-camps were met with strong support from local administration, concerned officials and Rotarians alike, particularly Habiganj Deputy Commissioner, Md Jainal Abedin, and the Divisional Director of Health for Sylhet Division, Bonodip Lal Das. Valuable support was provided by staff from Chevron-supported Smiling Sun community clinics, and student volunteers from local schools and colleges.

These Chevron-supported eye camps have been running since 2005, and form a key part of its health initiatives undertaken for the communities living near its areas of operation.
