Chevron Supports Laboratory School in Habiganj

DHAKA, May 26, 2015 – The new building of BIAM Laboratory School in Habiganj was formally declared open at a ceremony, presided over by the Habiganj Deputy Commissioner, M. Joynal Abedin. Chevron was a major financial contributor towards the construction work of these new premises that now stand as an example of a successful public-private partnership. The new building now includes four classrooms for over 350 students in Grades I-V, and a teachers’ common room.
The DC, who is also the President of the BIAM School Management Committee of the District, said, “These new premises will help the Laboratory School to provide quality education for children, equipping them to take on the challenges of the new millennium. We are grateful to Chevron’s crucial support in constructing the building”. Chief Guest at the event was Md. Fazlul Hoque, Director General of BIAM Foundation, who said in his remarks, “I believe that comprehensive and integrated quality education initiatives will help to build a bright nation, and I would like to thank Chevron for coming forward to support our efforts in Habiganj.” Representing Chevron were Matt Kelly, Chevron’s Health, Environment & Safety Supervisor, Malay Kumar Sarker, Field Community Engagement Manager, and Mahmudul Hasan, Coordinator, Government Affairs, at Bibiyana Gas Plant, located in Habiganj District.
Chevron Bangladesh’s Quality Education Support Program, has been running since 2006. Aside from distribution of annual scholarships to over 1,600 underprivileged but meritorious students, also included under its purview are infra-structure support, funding for additional teachers and teachers’ training, endowment fund for future sustainability, in-house computer labs, school uniforms & sports equipment.
