China Keen To Build A Coal Terminal At Maheshkhali

EB Report

China has shown its interest to build a coal terminal, a coal transport channel at Maheshkhali site, the next power hub location of the country. They are also keen to develop the lands of the project site and are also willing to manage the funding sources that will be required to do all these things.

China National Complete Engineering Corporation (CCEC), a subsidiary of a Chinese state-owned company has recently submitted such proposals to the Power division of Bangladesh. However, CCEC claimed that, they are interested in conducting such projects without any tendering.

CCEC is a subsidiary of the National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH) of China, which is affiliated with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council.

Bangladesh government is willing to develop a ‘power hub’ at the southern part of the country. Maheshkhali, the only mountainous island of the country has been selected as the site. Several power plants and terminals are about to be housed within that area. So a huge amount of land is needed to be prepared well and a coal transport and terminal facility will be required to power up the coal-based power plants.

CCEC has proposed to develop 5,000 acres of land to house the main infrastructures. According to their proposal, a terminal and a channel will also be built to ease the storage and transportation problem of the coal needed for the power plants.

The Power division claimed that they have a plan to install at least 5-6 large scale power plants at that area which will have a collective capacity of generating almost 5-6 thousand MW of electricity.

According to the government’s master plan, there will be a number of power plants installed at the coastal areas of the country with a collective capacity of 20,000 MW of electricity.

A high official of the Power Development Board (PDB) has confirmed that, till the date of reporting this, no tenders were called for land development or to build a coal terminal at Maheshkhali.

However, the government is about to install an LNG-based power plant with a capacity of 3,000 MW at the Maheshkhali site. PDB has already started surveying the project site and the authority is hopeful to finish the survey within the next one month.
