Climate Change May Worsen This Years’ Weather

Shanchita Shitu

2017 may bring us a lot disaster; disasters like excessive rain, drought, flood, river erosion and cyclone may strike the country more frequently in this year. The climate of this planet is changing more rapidly than expected so is the weather, causing much suffering to countries like Bangladesh for their geographic location.

Now, summer is approaching here in Bangladesh. But the experience of the very last summer to the countrymen was not much pleasant for the scorching heat of the sun and extra humid weather at both day and night times. Fall and autumn just showed up and ended without enough rain but provided with the excessive sticky weather. Winter wasn’t that terrible at all and was also short-timed as well, which is really unusual.

According to the international weather and meteorological agencies, the prevailing warm weather is the outcome of the global climate change. They said that, the average temperature of the last 6 months was at least 1 to 2.5 degree Celsius higher than that of the usual range. It is an alarming message to the countries like Bangladesh that, disasters are coming.

In a situation like this the country is observing the National Disaster Preparedness Day on this Friday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will declare the inauguration of the programs of this national day from Osmani Memorial Hall of the city on Friday morning and a 7-day long fair will also be organized at the hall premises that will showcase machines, techniques and equipment to defend disasters.

According to the meteorologists, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a recurring climate pattern involving changes in the temperature of waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. This oscillating warming and cooling pattern, referred to as the ENSO cycle, directly affects rainfall distribution in the tropics. ENSO cycle involves three stages namely: El Niño, La Niña and ENSO Neutral.

Meteorologists suggested that, El Niño is responsible for warmer weathers in our regions and La Niña on the other hand, is responsible for heavy rainfall in the southern part of Asia while ENSO Neutral means average weather.

Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said that, the average temperature of the pacific area has mitigated, suggesting that, the impact of El Niño has reduced. Experts said that, there is a 75 percent possibility of La Niña getting stronger in our regions, which means more hot weather, cyclone, storms, floods may appear in the coming summer.

Both President Md. Abdul Hamid and PM Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages regarding this day. In his message President Md. Abdul Hamid said that, the country has proven its capability of successfully fighting and dealing so many disasters like cyclones and floods which have made the country a role model in the world. He said that, the government is relentlessly confronting the disasters and the countrymen have been constantly confronting with natural calamities and surviving successfully.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her message said that, the natural calamities are unpreventable, but the risks can be minimized through taking enough safety-precaution. She added that, historically Bangladesh is a country full of natural calamities in almost every season. To mitigate the possible loss and damages to life and assets, proper awareness should be raised and proper precautionary measures should be taken.

She also said that, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formed Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) back in 1972 to save his countrymen. Besides, Bangabandhu built ‘Mujib killas’ in coastal areas of the country to save livestock from the cyclone and bore.

In a press conference held on last Thursday, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, the minister of disaster management and relief ministry said that, disasters are more likely to occur from the month of March to September. Already, cyclones have started showing up at different parts of the country, he added. Losses can be mitigated is proper precautionary measures are taken, he said. Among others, Shah Kamal, the ministry secretary and Riaz Ahmed, the director general of the disaster management department was present at the press conference.

The press conference informed that, different activities like leaflet distribution, postering, rallies, talk shows, drawing competition, carrying out drill on earthquake, fire and some other different activities are to be organized throughout the country in this day.
