Customers Deceived Buying Bogus Imported Solar Panels

Mahfuj Risad

There are plenty of opportunities to utilize the renewable energy sources properly throughout the entire country. Experts say that, the country’s current capacity of producing the solar panels is at least two times more than the current demand. In spite of having the capacity of fulfilling the current demands of solar panels by producing them locally, some are still importing low-quality solar panels from abroad risking the emerging local solar panel industries.

An orientation program was organized on Tuesday by the Solar Module Manufacturers Association of Bangladesh (SMMAB) at the city’s CIRDAP Auditorium where the speakers expressed their apprehension about the unregulated imports of the solar panels.

Being present at the program, the state minister for power, energy and mineral resources said that, the mass people still think that the solar power is costlier; which isn’t true at all in the long run. He added that, many of the world’s countries have gone so far in utilizing the solar power and we still have a long way to go. “We’ll have to enlarge the market for solar power and other means of renewable energy by popularizing theme among the countrymen”, he said.

He also added that, the government is planning to install solar parks at Mirsarai and Gazipur with an estimated area of 2,000 of land. The government is also about to make a grid system for the solar power in such a way where private entrepreneurs will be able to invest their money easily.

Md. Anwarul Islam, the chairman of Sustainable Renewable Energy Development (SREDA) said that, SREDA is always with them who are working in the field of renewable energy.

Mizanur Rahman Jodder, the executive director of Bangladesh Bank said that, the solar panel is the most optimum tool to achieve the access to electricity where there is no grid line. Bangladesh Bank has formed ‘green fund’ to induce the use of environment-friendly and renewable energy and instructed the other banks to fund in the green projects.

Mahmud Malik, the chief executive of Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) said that, Bangladesh may consider itself successful in implementing the use of the solar home system. We want to achieve generating 10 percent of our power which is 2,400 MW from renewable sources within the year of 2021, where most of it will come from solar power.

SMMAB president Monwar Mesbah Moeen said that, according to government’s plan 30 lacs families are still to get solar power. Implementing this plan requires huge solar panels worth 11 hundred crore BDT, which may go to the hands of the foreigners if we fail to stop importing foreign solar panels, said SMMAB president.
