Deal For Two More Russian Nuclear Power Units In India Signed

EB Desk

Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) signed contracts with Atomstroyexport, sister concern of Russia’s state corporation Rosatom on July 31 for design and supply of the main equipment for units 5 and 6 under phase 3 of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, in the state of Tamil Nadu.

“The project for construction of units 5 and 6 of Kudankulam NPP is passing to the practical implementation phase. Designing begins and development of procurement procedures for main equipment of Russian production are underway for implementation of phase III of the Indian nuclear power plant”, said Mr. Andrey Lebedev, Vice-President on projects in the Southern Asia, JSC ASE EC.

Earlier on June 1, 2017, in Saint-Petersburg, during XVIII Annual Russian-Indian Summit, ASE Group of Companies and Nuclear Power Corporation of India signed the General Framework Agreement for construction of the third phase of Kudankulam NPP. The intergovernmental credit protocol was also signed under which Russia has extended a credit for the delivery of equipment and documentation for the construction of the third phase of the project.

Atomstroyexport has already completed construction of two power units in the first phase, which are supplying electricity to Indian national grid. Two more units are under construction in the second phase.

Kudankulam NPP is constructed as per design of Atomenergoproekt, with VVER-1000 power units, which fully satisfies the Russian regulatory and technical requirement as well as requirements from IAEA. These units have also been certified for compliance with the requirements of European Operating Organizations Club (EUR).

General Contractor (regarding detailed design, equipment supply and technical assistance) is Atomstroyexport.

Atomstroyexport is in process of implementing the Bangladesh’s first ever nuclear power plant at Rooppur of Ishwardi. The project will have two most modern VVER 1200 power units of Generation 3+ technology.
