Deal Signed For 200MW Solar Power Plant At Teknaf

EB Report

The government has taken initiatives to install a 200 MW solar Power Plant at Madhyanila of Teknaf, Cox’s bazaar. This would be the largest single solar power plant in the country with an estimated record cost of $300 million. According to the same estimation, the cost of the electricity would be $0.17 or Tk 13.60 for per kilowatt-hour (Unit).

The state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB or PDB) inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) on Monday with Southern Solar Power Ltd (SSPL) to set up this solar power plant. SSPL is a subsidiary of US-based SunEdison in Bangladesh. Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) also signed at the agreement as it will be responsible for transmitting the electricity to the national grid.

According to the agreement, SSPL would build the solar-based power plant at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar within next 18 months. PDB will purchase the electricity from SSPL for 20 years on ‘no electricity, no payment basis’ under the agreement. Officials said the power plant, which has already received the approval of the government’s purchase committee, will be set up on around 800 to 1,000 acres of land.

Mina Masud Uzzaman, BPDB secretary, and Ismael Guerrero Arias, chief executive officer of SunEdison for Southeast Asia, signed the deal.State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Power secretary Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus and BPDB chairman Khaled Mahmood spoke on the deal signing occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Nasrul Hamid said the government has planned to encourage electricity generation from renewable energy sources. At present, some 434 MW of renewable electricity was being generated in the country, he said. Approvals to build more solar electricity plants with 300 MW of capacity have already been awarded. The proposed solar park to be built in Gaibanda and Mirersorai would expand the use of solar electricity in the country, he added.
