Deal Signed To Upgrade 150MW Power Plant To 250MW In Sylhet

The 150 MW simple cycle power plant of Sylhet is going to be upgraded to a 225 MW combined cycle power plant by a fund raised by the customers. The Power Development Board (PDB) has already signed a deal on Sunday with Chinese Shanghai Electric Group to upgrade this current power plant.

Power secretary Ahmad Kaykaus, PDB chairman Khaled Mahmud were present at the deal signing ceremony among others. The deal signing ceremony held at the city’s Bidyut Bhaban. PDB Secretary Mina Masud Uzzaman and Shanghai Electric Group’s DMD Miz Yangying signed at the deal on behalf of their respective sides.

Power secretary said that, many of the private sector firms are now involved in power generation and the demand for power is ever increasing. The government is actively seeking to meet the demand by taking assistance from sources like the private sector and sub-regional cooperation. He added that, supplying uninterrupted power supply will be possible if the private sector contributes more to this sector.

PDB chairman said that, a total of 8 thousands MW of power was added to the national grid in the last 8 years. He added that, the integrative and collaborative works of the power division and its different stakeholders made it possible.

Related sources claimed that, the fund that will be used for the upgrade of the 150 MW power plant of Kumargaon, Sylhet is actually coming from its prevailing customers. A part of the electric bill that the customers paid was saved in a development fund and now this development fund got matured and it will be used for the upgrade of the power plant. Earlier, the fund was also utilized in different types of investments, mainly in developmental projects of the power sector.

The related sources claimed that, the estimated cost of this project is 79 thousand, 662 lac and 84 thousand taka. The Government of Bangladesh will contribute around 299 lac 32 thousand crore taka while the PDB development fund will raise rest 79 thousand, 363 lac and 52 thousand taka. Within the June of 2019, the combined cycle unit of the power plant unit is expected to be operational.
