DESCo Wants To Raise Power Price Providing Poor Service

EB Report

Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (DESCo) has proposed to raise the price of power while there are still a lot of allegations of load-shedding and other other quality of service related issues from the consumers.

DESCo proposed for a price hike of 6.34 percent in a public hearing session that held at the Bangladesh Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Monday. BERC Chairman Monwar Islam along with the members of BERC namely Mizanur Rahman, Rahman Murshed, Abdul Aziz Khan, Mahmudul Haque Bhuiya were present at the hearing.

The company currently supplies power to areas such as Uttara, Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Mirpur and they proposed for a retail price hike of power by 6.34 percent. However, the Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) of the BERC recommended for a 1.11 percent hike of the power price which is a 0.08 tk hike for per unit of electricity.

Referring to the accounts of 2016-17 fiscal year, DESCo said that, it receive Tk 7.2 per unit against the need for Tk 7.40, which means the DESCo incurres a loss of Tk 0.2 per unit in that fiscal year.

Meanwhile, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Advisor Prof Shamsul Alam along with other representatives of the consumers strongly opposed the proposal of DESCo, saying the organization can easily run with its current profits. Mismanagement of the state-run companies and wrong policy of the government is forcing the power generation and distribution cost to go high, which must not be imposed on the general consumers, said Prof Dr Shamsul Alam.
