DPDC Proposed For A 6.24% Hike In Power Price

EB Report

Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) has proposed for a power price hike by 6.24 percent on an average in retail power in a public hearing session.

The public hearing session held at the BERC office on Thursday in response to the proposals from the state-owned power generation and distribution companies. DPDC Executive Director Golam Mostofa placed the proposal at the public hearing sessoion organized at the TCB bhaban in the city.

BERC Chairman Monowar Islam and its members– Mijanur Rahman, Rahman Murshed, Abdul Aziz Khan and Mahmudul Bhuiyan were present at the hearing.

DPDC said that, they had to count a loss of Tk 0.43 for per unit due to deficit between buying price and selling price which has incurred a total loss of  Tk 350 crores in 2016-17 FY.

DPDC also asked for increasing service charge for other types of recipients.

Prof Dr Shamsul Alam, the energy advisor of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) strongly opposed the idea of raising the price of power of DPDC. He said that, the price won’t need not to be raised once transparency and efficiency can be assured at DPDC. He alleged that, DPDC has done something very discriminating as the bill for the luxurious, air-conditioned shopping molls (11Kv) is Tk 7.45 per unit where the bill for a footpath shopkeeper is as high as Tk 9.66 per unit.

CPB Leader Ruhin Hossain Prince said that, the countrymen have been suffering from many disasters since last couple of months including flood, Rohingya issue, excessive price hike of the rice and other daily commodities and so on. In a situation like this, creating an extra burden by raising the power price will be an utterly irrational step.
