Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh

Almost entire country was jolted strongly early this morning as a strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Indian state Manipur, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department(BMD) told.

According to a message of the Met Office, location of the earthquake was in Monipur, India region and the distance of the epicentre was 353 kilometres from Dhaka Seismic Observatory at Agargaon.

The Met Office recorded a strong earthquake today at 05 hours 05 minutes 21.00 seconds (BST) having a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale, it added. Panicked people rushed out of their residences and came to their nearby roads following the jolts.

At least two persons were died of cardiac arrest in Dhaka and Rajshahi and over 50 others mostly students of Dhaka University, were injured after the powerful earthquake jolted the country early this morning.

The victims were identified as Atikur Rahman Atik, 23, a resident of Jurain in the capital city and main cook Khalilur Rahman, 40, of Bangabandhu Hall of Rajshahi University.
