ECNEC Approves Tk 130 Billion Project For Energy And Power

EB Report

The government has approved a Tk 130 billion project to ensure uninterrupted power supply across Bangladesh.

The ECNEC in a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, cleared the project called ‘Power Grid Network Strengthening Project under PGCB’.

Planning Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal later told journalists that the project will seek to strengthen the power distribution system in the country. We expect to achieve a power generation target of 24,000 MW by 2021. For seamless distribution of so much additional power generated, we have to strengthen our inter-connected network of transmission lines, Kamal said.

The government will mobilise Tk 37.29 billion from its own resources for the Tk 137.03 billion project. The Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh (PGCB) will mobilise Tk 2.66 billion.

China will put in the remaining Tk 97.08 billion for the project, the planning minister said. He said 78 percent of the country has already got electricity coverage.

By 2021, the government intends to reach electricity to all in Bangladesh. But we should be able to ensure power coverage for the entire nation by 2019, the minister said.
