Gas price hike in Sept

EB Report

Consumers will have to count enhanced price for gas next September.
“We’ve discussed about the hike in gas prices with the government. Increased price will be adjusted from September,” said an official at Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
On a query, BERC member pointed out that the discussion was obligatory as the government subsidises  gas and power, although the commission is an autonomous body.
“Subsidy is directly connected with the gas price,” he added.
After six years of the previous hike, the Awami League-led government has now planned to increase the prices of gas for all types of consumers, especially at household level, with a view to reducing wastage.
State-owned Petrobangla has proposed a proportionate hike for industrial and commercial users (around 30 per cent) than for the households (over 122 per cent) since it wants to give business entities a breathing space.
On October 30, 2014 Petrobangla submitted a proposal to BERC for raising gas price.
BERC officials said it was wrong that it did not take initiative to hike gas price in the last six years.
Petrobangla officials said they had been trying to hike gas price since from 2009 but the BERC did not response.
The evaluation committee did not suggest any gas price hike by BERC during a hearing in October, 2014.
