Gas Price Raised To Get Rid Of Subsidies In Sector: Nasrul

The state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid said that, the government is trying to reduce the subsidies on gas and that is why the gas price was hiked. On the other hand, the planned import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) which is actually a lot costlier than natural gas, so there is a demand in adjusting the price of both of the gasses.

The state minister said so in a seminar on ‘Energy Efficiency in Bangladesh’ held on Sunday at Radisson Blue Hotel at the city which was arranged on the wake of International Energy Efficiency Day. Being the chief guest at the seminar Nasrul Hamid asked the industry owners to get ready to pay higher gas tariff in the future. “We’re trying to provide imported gas to industries within two years which will be costlier. So, I’d ask the industries to get ready to pay the increased gas price,” he added.

The global oil market is now in an unstable situation mentioning that, the state minister said that, he might take steps to reduce the oil price once the international market gets stable.

Institute of Policy, Advocacy and Governance (IPAG), a think tank, organized the seminar on the occasion of International Energy Efficiency Day. Energy secretary Naziumuddin Choiwdhury, Petrobangla chairman Abul Mansur Fayzullah, joint secretary to the power division Siddique Zobayer and other prominent experts also spoke at the seminar with IPAG chairman Prof Syed Munir Khasru in the chair.

The speakers of the seminar talked about sustainable solutions towards the global and local energy crisis. The experts in the seminar also laid emphasis on implementing energy efficient plans to secure the country’s energy security.
