Govt Respond to UNESCO’s Concern Over Rampal PP Within A Week

EB Report

The government will respond to UNESCO’s concern over the Rampal power plant near the Sundarbans within a week, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said.

He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a workshop on research in power and energy sector at Bidyut Bhaban on Sunday.

The Maitree Super Thermal Power Project is a joint venture by India and Bangladesh and will come up at Rampal in Bagerhat near the Sundarbans, the delta region declared a World Heritage Site by the UN body.

Although many civic and environmental organisations have voiced their opposition to the project, the government has been trying to allay their fears, insisting that the project would not adversely affect the delicate ecosystem of the Sundarbans.

Recently UNESCO has written that they are worried about the project for Sundarban.

The minister said UNESCO expressed concern also over some other issues like impact on rivers. He said, We are considering the concerns with importance and factoring them into the reply.

The government had earlier informed the UN body about the technical matters related to the Rampal power plant. Now we are providing the details.UNESCO would understand there is nothing to be worried once they get our statement.

Nasrul also urged the protesters to speak ‘logically’. He said,If someone can prove we are scientifically wrong, we are ready to accept that even now.

According to him, the government was working to create capability of adding 1,500 megawatt power every year.

He said, We don’t want power cuts anymore. We want power connections at all places within 2018, That’s why we’ll have to opt for mixed fuel. We’ll have to bring coal.
