The National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Natural Resources and
Power-Port is likely to organize a grand rally on 20th April in Khulna
protesting the controversial Rampal power plant which is located near
the Sundarbans region.
The national committee made the announcement at a press conference at
Mukti Bhaban in the city on Tuesday. Convener of the national
committee Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah read out a written
statement at the press conference while the organization’s leaders
Tipu Biswas, Saiful Haque, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Bazlur Rashid Firoz,
Zonaid Saki, Mosharraf Hossain were present on the occasion.
Addressing at the press conference Prof. Anu Mohammad, the member
secretary of the national committee said that, the Rampal power plant
would be the most detrimental project for the ecosystem of the
Sundarbans and the economy of our country. Sundarbans acts as the
‘natural shield’ which protects the country from various natural
calamities, he added. “We cannot afford to lose the great Sundarbans
for the sake of a low-quality coal-fired power plant like Rampal”, he
asserted. To face the challenges of climate change, we need to protect
our Sundarbans, he added.
The leaders said the government has been implementing Rampal power
plant in the name of resolving power crisis. But there are so many
ways to resolve the crisis. But the government is ignoring those ways
and working against the national interest by implementing the Rampal
project. Anu Mohammad said that, there are other alternatives to
generate electricity and in the same way there are alternatives to
light up the southern part of the country but Sundarbans has no
