Visiting Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has assured all out support and cooperation to Bangladesh in the construction of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
IAEA DG gave the assurance during a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office here today.
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim while briefing reporters after the meeting said IAEA DG expressed satisfaction over the security measures taken by the government for construction of the nuclear power plant.
“Overall steps relating to Nuclear Power Plant are much more advanced than he thought,” Yukiya Amano said adding that he is happy to see strong leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and enthusiasm of the people for the power plant.
In response Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought Support of IAEA and apprised him of three layer protection measures. Training of the technicians of the projects has already started, she said.
Yukiyo Amano thanked the Prime Minister for the ratification of the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities (CPPNM-NF). Nuclear energy could be used in all sectors including agriculture sector, he said.
The prime minister expressed her desire for a second nuclear power plant in the country saying such plants are required as consumption of electricity is increasing gradually due to improvement of the living standard of the people.
Among others, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafes Osman, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, chief coordinator on SDG affairs Md Abul Kalam Azad were present.
