Wake Up Call for PM Hasina

The massive defeat of Mahiuddin Chowdhury in the Chittagong Corporation Election to his long time associate Manzoor Alam must serve a wake up call for PM Hasina. Many thought that Mahiuddin in Chittagong is invincible. Even during rule of BNP in 1991-96 and even 4 party rule of 2001-2006 strong BNP opponent was overwhelmed. Mahiuddin is activist of Bangladesh Awami League. Mahjote led by Awami League won landslide victory in the last general election.

Streamlining Energy sector management to confront and overcome the prevailing and emerging energy crisis was one of the major challenges when Awami League led Mahajote formed the government in January 2009. It was told mahajote had required homework for confronting crisis and improve situation in the shortest possible time. In the election pledge government announced to add 1500MW power by 2011 and another 3500MW by the end of the term i.e. 2014 .All together about 5000MW new power was their promised target.

Coal Fired Power Generation –Requires Caution

To confront serious power generation and supply crisis present Bangladesh government has implementing a massive plan to generate 9426MW new power by 2015.It is indeed a  serious challenge for a country which could achieve only about 4000MW effective generation capacity in 39 years since indepence.85% of generation is natural gas based. Nataural gas production and transmission also is stuck in beauracratic quagmire. Country has significant volume of untapped high quality coal reserve at mineable depth.
