I AM sure many of you have noticed that when you refill your car’s CNG (clean natural gas), instead of getting back the exact change, you get a bar of soap (this happens primarily on the road from Dhaka to Savar). That’s great news for those who want to take a shower every hour and add to the water crisis

Chittagonians can see some lights at the end of the tunnels. Citizens of the port city Chittagong may get some respite in not too distant future from diabolic energy situation. At long last after protracted discussions , extensive brainstorming energy sector management approved the third party direct market access right to Santos/ Cairn Block 16 Joint venture for IOC share of gas from further development of Shangu Gas field. This incentive will encourage the IOCs to invest further risk capital in a sensible acceptable ROR regime.

To confront and overcome prevailing and emerging energy crisis, the worst ever in the history of Bangladesh Government has announced mega plan to add new generation of 9426 MW by 2015. Government has planned increasing natural gas production by another 2400MMCFD by that time. The present effective power generation is about 4000MW against a demand of 6000MW.

One Bangladesh daily has published a write up of Professor Anu Muhammad, Head of The Department of Economics of Jahangir Nagar University on coal mining in Bangladesh. This write up he mentioned is a response to another write up of a well known Bangladesh Geologist Dr. Eunuse Akhon published in the same newspaper. Dr. Eunuse Akhon in his write up favored open pit mining stating strong techno economic and geological reasons.

Crisis affected Bangladesh Energy sector management appears to still remain in dilemma over exploration and exploitation of its huge high quality coal resource. While it is struggling with about 6 Tcf left over proven natural gas reserve about 65tcf high heating value, low sulfur and low ash bituminous coal reserve is lying mostly unutilized for lack of appropriate mining strategy.
