International Day of Forest Today

Today is 21st of March, Countries around the world including Bangladesh are observing this day as the International Day of Forests. In countries like Bangladesh, social forestation would be a source of income for the marginal and poor people, said the forest conservators and government officials.

The Government is observing the day with a motto saying, “Forests are the home of energy sources of nature”- let’s conserve our forest and enhance the life and nature. A seminar was organised in the city in regard to the day, where speakers focused on conservation of the existing forests and reforestation. The seminar was organised by the department of forest on the eve of International Day of Forest in the capital where environment and forests minister Anwar Hossain Monju was the chief guest of the program.

The forest minister said that, the forest department distributed profits of social forestation worth over Tk 300 crore so far to the impoverished people who were the stakeholders under the projects. Social forestation still has potentials on creating more opportunities for the poor people of Bangladesh, which would at the same time save the country’s ecosystem.

The seminar was chaired by chief conservator of forest Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, state minister for environment and forests ministry Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, secretary of the ministry Ishtiaque Ahmed, keynote presenters Arif Faisal, Zahidur Rahman Miah, professor Niaz Ahmed, among others, addressed the seminar.
