Komen weakened

EB Desk

Met office lowers danger signal as a weakened ‘Komen’ crosses Chittagong coast. Tropical storm ‘Komen’, packing wind speeds of 60-70 kmph, has crossed the Chittagong coast without causing any serious damage and has begun to weaken.
It crossed the coast near Sandwip Island in the early hours and was currently over Noakhali and the adjoining areas as a land depression, the Meteorological Department said in a bulletin on Friday.

Komen’s latest progress was causing light to heavy showers in different parts of Bangladesh since the early hours.

The Met office said the storm was ‘likely to move west-northwestwards inland and weaken gradually’.

It also lowered the danger signal No. 7 to cautionary signal No. 3 for Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar maritime ports.

The danger signal No. 5 for the Mongla and Payra ports were also brought down to cautionary signal No. 3.

Until now, trees uprooted by strong winds in four districts since Thursday have reportedly killed four people and damaged many houses.

Tidal waves, at least five-feet high, had inundated the low-lying areas including several islands and shoals

With Komen approaching, the Cox’s Bazar airport had suspended operations since Wednesday night.

Goods handling was minimal at the Chittagong Port, where an ‘alert 3’ had been issued.

BIWTA had halted inland water transport until further notice after danger signal No. 7 was issued by the Met office on Wednesday night.

But vessel movements resumed when the danger signal was lowered after the weakened storm crossed the coast on Friday morning, said Syed Mahbubur Rahman Mahfuz, the BIWTA traffic inspector at Dhaka’s Sadarghat.

The Met office, however, asked fishing boats and ships at sea to move to safer places until the afternoon.
