LNG supply in Ctg city begins

Nurul Amin

The Supply of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) began in the port city of Chattogram since 2.30 pm on Saturday after 115 days of import. In the seventh attempt, the authorities became successful on Saturday.
Earlier they tried six times since May 25 last. The commissioning of the FSRU has been shifted again and again. But the authorities have deferred the supply of imported liquefied natural gas to the national grid due to leaks in the pipeline. In the latest attempt, on August 12, the gas has been flowed to supply network from the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) terminal situated in Moheshkhali. LNG reached Anowara point of the pipe line on Friday last.
Talking to the Daily Observer, Khaiz Ahmed Mazumder, Managing Director of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) said, ‘LNG gas supplied from the FSRU terminal has entered into the pipeline network of KGDCL at 2.30 pm today.’
He said, ‘Initially we shall get 75 million cft of gas from the FSRU. From September 4, the volume of gas will increase to 100 million and then to 300 million at the end of December next.’
Meanwhile, the KGDCL is getting 220 mmcft of gas from National Grid against the total demand of 500 mmcft per day.
Meanwhile, the MT Excellence, a mother tanker of the USA carrying 138,000 cubic metres of LNG to be used as FSRU terminal has been installed in April 24. FSRU is a special type of ship used for storing and degasifying the LNG and supplying it on shore.
The FSRU in Bangladesh has the capacity to hold 138,000 cubic metres and distribute up to 500 million cubic feet per day.
The Tanker is 277 metre long, 44 metre wide and 12.5 metre draft. Earlier, the ship of 190 metre long with 9 metre draft arrived in the Chattogram Port.
Meanwhile, the construction works of 91 km long pipeline from Moheshkhali to Chattogram have been completed for transmission of LNG. Five contractors have completed the construction of 91 kilometre long transmission pipeline from Moheshkhali to Anowara.
