Mayors Eager To Assist Generate Electricity From Waste

Mayors from the largest cities of the country expressed their wishes to cooperate the Power Division to generate electricity from waste.

The Mayors from the City Corporations of Dhaka north and south, Chittagong and Narayanganj made this call on today in a meeting held at the secretariat. The meeting was chaired by the state minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

Siddique Zobayer, a member of the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority presented an article on ‘waste collection and management in the city corporations’. She said that, Dhaka city produces 4200 tons of garbage and waste daily which can be turned into electricity. This much waste can generate up to 76 MW of electricity, as suggested in her article.

Nasrul Hamid said, “In order to secure an environment-friendly future, we need to utilize and recycle our wastages in a more efficient way”. The cities will become neat and clean once again if we can manage to generate electricity from the waste, he added. State minister stated that, the price of the electricity that is about to be produced from the waste might be a bit higher than the regular price but still the government is ready to buy this kind of waste produced power for a greater futuristic reason.

Dhaka North City Corporation (CC) Mayor Anisul Haque, Narayanganj CC Mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy and Chittagong CC Mayor A Z M Nasir Uddin also addressed the meeting. They have expressed their willingness to take part in the program of ‘power generation from waste’. Power Division recently declared that they are on the way to initialize a project to generate electricity from the waste that produced in the major cities.
