National Committee and Left Parties Protest Phulbari

Leaders of the national committee and left parties on Thursday at separate rallies in the city showed protests against the initiatives of the Asia Energy for extraction of coal of Phulbari coal mine in open pit method.

The leaders at separate rallies opposed the Phulbari visit of a senior official of the Asia Energy now named Global Coal Management, Gary Lye, with her wife on Wednesday.

Gary held meetings with the local people at office of the Asia Energy and the local people held demonstrations opposing his visit, the leaders said at the rallies.

National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports held a protest rally in front of the National Press Club, were the convener of the committee Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, said the people of Phulbari would not allow any company to extract coal in open pit method.

In 2006, four  people were killed in Phulbari, when the police opened fire to calm the demonstrators who opposed open pit method there.

Moreover, the people would not allow Asia Energy or Global Coal Management, for extraction of coal from the mine, Shaheedullah said.

The BNP led government compelled to sign six points Phulbari deal, and committed to refrain from implementing open pit method and t driven out Asia Energy from Bangladesh.

Shahedullah called on the Awami League led government to implement the Phulbari deal immediately.

The national committee will hold countrywide demonstrations on December 3, in demand of implementation of the Phulbari deal and protesting against the visit of an Asia Energy high official in Phulbari.

The member secretary of the committee Anu Muhammad, committee leaders Saiful Huq,  Ruhin Hossain Prince, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Mosharraf Hossain Nannu, Mushrefa Mishu,  Abdus Salm, Jahangir Alam Fazlu and others attended the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Earlier, the Democratic Left Alliance, Communist Party of Bangladesh,  Socialist Party of Bangladesh and Socialist Party of Bangladesh(Marxist), held separate rallies in the same venue  protesting the visit of the Asia Energy top official in Phulbari.

The DLA rally was addressed, among others by its coordinator Abdus Satter, Saiful Huq, Mushrefa Mishu and Manas Nandi.

The CPB and SPB rally was addressed, among others by the CPB central leaders Ahsan Habib Lablu, Ruhin Hossain Prince and the SPB central leaders Bazlur Rashid Firoz and Razequzzaman Ratan.

The rallies were followed by the protest processions.
