Phulbari Day Today, 11 Years Of Resistance

Today is the 11th anniversary of Phulbari Tragedy Day. On this day in 2006, the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Police opened fire on a demonstration organized by the villagers, indigenous people, protesting against open-pit coal-mining by Asia Energy. At least 3 were killed namely Aminul, Salekin, Torikul, 20 more were shot and more than 200 were injured on this tragic day.

Four days after the incident, the then BNP-led government, on August 30, signed a six-point agreement with protesters, represented by the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also the then opposition leader paid her visit in Phlbari on 5th September 2006 to support the
protesters and proclaimed that she would implement the agreement on a full scale. However, PM Shekh Hasina has been in power since 2009 but the agreement is not implemented fully.

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port is arranging several programs remembering the tragic event.
