Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is about to be turned into a
company. In fact, only the distribution part of PDB will be handed
over to a new company called North-West Zone Power Distribution
Company Ltd. (NWZPDC) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also expressed
her consent in the transformation procedure of this state run
Today, the prime minister had a meeting with shipping minister
Shahjahan Khan and state minister for power, energy and mineral
resources Nasrul Hamid. She there asked the state minister about the
progress of the handing over procedure and urged it to make it fast.
However, the employees are firmly against it. They have been
demonstrating for the past few days demanding cancellation of the new
company. Nasrul Hamid sat on another meeting with the leaders of
workers union of PDB after attending the PM meeting.
After the meeting the president of ‘Bidyut Sramik League’ Md. Zahirul
Islam told the Energybangla that, he couldn’t find any solid
directions from the minister’s speech. However, he declared that, the
protest will get stiffer if the government doesn’t change its course
towards the transformation procedure of PDB. He even threatened to
shut off the power generation if the demand is not met.
The workers started their protests from 1st August, the day when the
formal procedure of the handover started as government signed a MoU,
as well as a power purchase and sales agreement with NWZPDC. As a part
of their movement, all the employees of PDB asked for a mass leave
from 9th to 11th August.
