Power, energy consumers to be brought under legal framework

Prime Minister’s Power and Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury yesterday said power and energy consumers would be brought under legal framework in order to save energy.

“Now, it’s the time to set timeframe for power and energy consumers to ensure efficient use of electricity and gas, If they fail, then legal measures would be taken,” Elahi said at a seminar on ‘Energy Management in Industries.’

SREDA and the Bangladesh Indenting Agents Association (BIAA) jointly organised the seminar at Biddyut Bhaban in Dhaka yesterday.

Energy adviser said the government is implementing Moheshkhali coal-fired power project hub at a cost equivalent to the budget for several Padma Bridge-like projects.

He said the consumers are severely suffering from shortage of electricity due to distribution side fault.

Responding to a quarry from Md Shahjahan, President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Elahi said the government would be able to ensure electricity for all by the year 2021.

Requesting the businessmen to have patience, he said the country’s power and energy problems would be resolved immediately.

Power Secretary Monowar Islam presided over the seminar addressed by State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin, BIAA President MH Shahidul Huq. Joint Power Secretary Siddique Jobair presented the keynote paper at the seminar.

Nasrul Hamid said the energy efficiency would be ensured in industrial units. “Industrial production cost would be reduced significantly if the industrialists set up efficient equipments in their industrial units,” he said.

It would also help diversify use of energy, he opined, adding that the government is aware of sustainable energy and renewable energy.

Siddique Jobair, in his keynote paper said, “It would be possible to save 2640MW of electricity if residential consumers can save energy while using fans, bulbs, motors, refrigerators, and ACs.

Besides, the country could save 63 billion cubic feet gas in a year from textiles, dyeing, re-rolling, steel industries. Around $6 billion dollar could be saved annually from power and energy sector through energy conservation, he mentioned.
