Bangladesh government has grossly increased its budgetary allocation in power and energy sector for the next fiscal.
Tk 211.18 billion has been earmarked for the sector, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said in his budget speech this afternoon. The amount is a 45 per cent increase in allocation as compared to last year.
He said the government sees sustainable development of power generation, transmission and distribution system as one of its priority areas.
Eighty per cent people of the country have been brought under electricity coverage, the minister said, adding that he firmly believes that the rest 20 per cent will be brought under electricity coverage ahead of 2021.
