Power subsidy stands Tk 2834.26 crore during last seven months of this fiscal since July’13 to January’14. According to the BPDB officials, the board incurred a loss of Tk 344.38 crore in each of December’13 and January this year for selling power with Tk 1.36 per unit bulk tariff gap, as the board has to purchase electricity at higher rates than its gets by selling to its consumers.
The BPDB would require Tk 306.88 crore for rest of two months subsidy between December’13 and January’14 as additional Tk 155.54 crore has already received as subsidy during last five months billing, official concern said.
BPDB secretary Md Jahurul Huq, on 11th February, sent an official letter to power division secretary, sought intervention to realize the subsidy from ministry of finance to pay the electricity bills.
He requested the finance division through power division not to consider the subsidy as a loan as per the directive of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC). He also said the BPDB will pay petroleum fuels bills in advanced to Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) after getting subsidy.
The BPDB now purchases 1405MW of electricity from rental, quick rental power projects and another 1066MW from IPPs, shouldering huge burden of subsidy.
