Price Hike Of Gas Is Rational But Two phased system Is Not

EB Report

The government’s decision on price hike of gas is rational and it has
to be raised sooner or later, but raising the price in two phases is
illogical, said Prof. Izaz Hossain, a faculty of BUET. People would be
able to adjust themselves somehow to the new price of gas once it
would be raised in one step. The recursive raise in the price of gas
and other related commodities with a two months gap will disturb many,
said the professor.

The government has raised the price of gas by 22.73 percent on an
average. Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) released a
public notice regarding the revised prices on Thursday. The new price
of gas will enact in two phases, first from 1st March and the second
phase will be enforced from 1st June of this year.

Izaz Hossain claimed that, the government had to hike the price of gas
to popularise the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and minimise
subsidies in the energy sector. However, the way of implementing the
decision is definitely faulty. Mass people will have to face many
difficulties to adjust with the recursive price hike. According to the
newly price list, the charge of gas used in power generation and
fertiliser productions are increased by a nominal value but, related
products and services price may go up on the ground of the price hike
tag. The government had to raise the charge of gas to face the
prevailing energy crisis of the country but the way was not
reality-proof at all, he stated.
