The process of raising the gas price has got postponed. Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has sidetracked the tariff hike process for now as it was suggested by the Prime Minister, claimed the sources from BERC.
Prior to this move, BERC was almost in the final stage to raise the gas tariff for the sectors of CNG, power and industry.
BERC is bound to impose new prices of energy and power within 90 days after a public hearing is being held once it finds it’s necessary to adjust the prices.
BERC arranged public hearing sessions throughout 11th to 21th of June of this year in response to the proposals from different gas distribution companies to raise the tariff.
Petrobangla requires USD 200 crore a year to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The process of raising the current gas tariff started to back the LNG import.
Earlier, BERC raised the gas tariff by 22 percent in two stages in the months of March and June in 2017.
