REB Asked To Pay Siam Tk 5m Compensation

EB Report

The High Court has asked the Rural Electrification Board (REB) to give Siam Khan, who lost his hands after coming in touch with torn wires of REB, Tk 5 million as compensation.

The HC order said Siam’s family has to be paid the money within 30 days.

After disposing of a rule in this regard, the HC bench comprising justice Kazi Reza-ul Haque and justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order on Tuesday.

On 24 April, Prothom Alo published a report titled ‘Both hands of Siam cut off’, which prompted Supreme Court lawyer Sifat Mahmud to file a writ petition.

The court issued a rule after the primary hearing, asking why it would not be termed a negligence on the REB’s part for failing to ensure security in those areas where electricital wires were cut off due to natural calamities.

It also wanted to know why Siam will not be compensated.

A probe report said Md Mizanur Rahman (Linesman Grade-1) did not register a complaint received at the REB centre on 5 April.

As a result, the matter was not drawn to the attention of the authorities and no steps were taken.

The accident would not have happened had the torn wires been fixed.
