Russia and Finland Sign Strategic Nuclear Partnership Agreement

Russian Federation and Finland have signed a strategic agreement for peaceful use of nuclear energy at a ceremony, held in Helsinki on February 25, 2014. The agreement creates a legal basis for future cooperation between Russia and Finland in the field of nuclear technologies.
Sergey Kiriyenko, Director General of the Russian state corporation- Rosatom, and Jan Vapaavuori, Minister for Economic Affairs of Finland signed the agreement on behalf of their respective states.
The ceremony was also attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Finland Alexander Rumiancev, Director General of Rusatom Overseas Djomart Aliev, high govt. officials from Russia and Finland, representatives of Finnish energy companies like Fortum, Fennovoima and TVO and others.
Russia recently had reached an agreement with the Finnish company Fennovoima on construction of the Hanhikivi NPP in Finland. For Russia it is a testimony of the Russian nuclear engineering technologies and, as well as an opportunity for entering the energy market of the Northern Europe.
For Finland this project will create safe, powerful and environmentally clean source of electricity and accelerate development of the northern regions of the country.
Sergey Kiriyenko confirmed that the NPP-2006 technology complying with all post-Fukushima safety requirements will be used in construction of Hanhikivi NPP.
Jan Vapaavuori in his brief speech said, “For more than 30 years the Loviisa NPP has been operating in Finland, which speaks of the reliability of Russian technologies. Rosatom devotes much attention to the security issues during engineering and construction of the nuclear plants. I believe that the joint project Hanhikivi, to be built with the Russian technologies, will be as successful as Loviisa NPP.”
