Russia Starts Testing of Accident Tolerant Nuclear Fuel

TVEL, Fuel Company of Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation has started testing accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) for nuclear reactors.

Accident-tolerant fuel is resistant to severe accidents at nuclear power plants. It is expected to keep its integrity for a quite a long enough time without a zirconium-steam reaction that induces hydrogen release.

First two assemblies accident-tolerant fuel have been manufactured at Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant. Tests are being conducted at MIR research reactor in Dimitrovgrad, Russia.

“The fabrication of the first accident tolerant fuel followed the large-scale work of scientists and engineers of TVEL, including in-depth materials research, introduction of new coating technologies and resistance butt-welding, and successful laboratory testing of the samples”, Alexander Ugryumov, Vice President for Research and Development at TVEL said.

The first phase of the reactor tests and post-reactor studies of accident-tolerant fuel will be completed in 2019. Next important stage includes loading fuel assemblies into a commercial power reactor in Russia.

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom incorporates enterprises for the fabrication of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations.

TVEL supplies nuclear fuel for 72 power reactors in 14 countries and research reactors in 8 countries. Every sixth power reactor in the world operates on fuel manufactured by TVEL.

TVEL has initialed an agreement with Bangladesh on Thursday, January 31, 2019 for supply of nuclear fuel for both the units of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant throughout its lifetime.
