Bangladesh’s Finance Ministry has recently sanctioned the budget for second phase of construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP). The amount allotted for this phase is USD 42.33 million.

According to the sources from the Ministry of Science and Technology, earlier the government had sanctioned USD 77.22 million for the first phase of the RNPP project. So far a total of USD 1.2 billion has been sanctioned for the project. Russia is giving 90 per cent of the total project cost as loan to Bangladesh.

The RNPP project is Bangladesh’s maiden nuclear power plant and is being constructed in Rooppur in Pabna district on 1062 acres of land. The concerned authority from Bangladesh has already asked for the fourth quarter (October-December) loan that is USD 4,89,089 from Atomstroyexport, the contractor Russian agency for the RNPP project. Already invoices and bank guarantee documents are sent to the contractor agency.

Under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) of 2018-19 fiscal year, a total of USD 13.08 billion has been allocated for the RNPP project, which is USD 1.1 billion more than the previous year’s allocation for the same project.

Science Secretary Anwar Hossain said that the construction of the RNPP is right on track and the project is likely to be completed within due time.
