Save Electricity By Behavioural Change

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid speaks at an energy saving campaign programme at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

Experts at an energy saving campaign on Sunday said that around 1225MW of electricity in industrial sector can be saved through change over of technology as well as behavioural pattern of consumers.

According to them, around 35 percent of off-peak consumption can be conserved through the process.

Speakers at the seminar also pointed out that smart transmission, generation and distribution system can also help preserve the electricity.

Consumers should be made aware about conservation of electricity, they said adding that awareness among government officials will also be created.

Experts made their opinion at a power saving campaign programme jointly organised by Bangladesh Solar and Renewable Energy Association and the Forum for Energy Reporters Bangladesh (FERB).

Prof Mizan R Khan presented a keynote paper at the programme. Officials from Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority said the demand of electricity in industrial units is around 3,500MW.
Through change over of technology and behavioral pattern of consumers a huge amount of power can be saved, they said. The behavioural pattern change means judicial use of electricity.  Attending at the campaign, Prime Minister’s Power and Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said public and private sector should work jointly to preserve electricity. He said, “It’s really unexpected to lead our life through western pattern…so we should change our electricity use pattern.”

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, who also attended at the campaign said most of the developed countries are now conserving electricity. But the lease developed countries wastage the electricity instead of save it, he added.

The building code should be revised to encourage conserving electricity, he proposed. Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, SREDA Chairman Helal Uddin, BPDB Chairman Khaled Mahmood, REB Chairman Moin Uddin, Power Cell Director General Mohammed Hossain, FERB Chairman Arun Karmaker and BSREA President Dipal C Barua spoke at the programme.
