Second unit of Kudankulam NPP Awaits Commissioning

The Second unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant, constructed with Russian assistance in Tamilnadu of India will be commission shortly. The construction of the power unit has already been completed and final adjustment of equipments are being done at the moment. The unit with 1,000MW capacity will have Russian VVER-1000 type reactor.
Russia’s state nuclear power corporation- Rosatom’s First Deputy CEO for Operations Management Alexander Lokshin told the journalists during an interaction in Russia recently.
He did not mention certain dates, highlighting that it depends on both Rosatom and India. “As I know, according to current plans, this is expected in summer. Indian people are carrying out the major constructions; therefore, they also determine the schedule. But definitely it will happen this year,” A. Lokshin said.
Earlier, the first unit of Kudankulam NPP of 1,000 MW capacity also built with Russian assistance went into commercial operation on 31st a December, 2014.
Russia and India have also signed a general framework agreement on the construction of the second phase of the Kudankulam NPP, which includes units III and IV.
The “road map” for cooperation in nuclear power industry between Russia and India provides for the construction of a total of 15 power units in India by Rosatom, including 4 to 8 units at the Kudankulam NPP site.
