Strange Ideas Against Power Development Efforts: PM

bdnews

The government is witnessing attempts at thwarting power development initiatives in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.

People have even lost their lives needlessly to these ‘strange ideas’, she said in reaction to the fatal clash over the construction of a coal-fired power station at Banshkhali.

“There is always a group that starts protests for the sake of environment for our every attempt to produce electricity,” she said while inaugurating new Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj on Sunday.

“People in our country have some strange ideas. I don’t know where they get these from.”

“These strange ideas have cost people their lives… I really can’t say what their motives are.”

Hasina said her government’s efforts in increasing electricity generation had provided people relief but that too was opposed despite how desperately the country needed it for development.

Four people were killed at Banshkhali’s Gandamara in a clash following simultaneous programmes called for and against the construction of the 1320MW coal-based power plant.

Locals said S Alam Group, a private company making the plant, requisitioned land from the people without providing them any relocation facilities.

They said the men were killed by shots fired by ‘miscreants hired by S Alam’.
