Subsidy In Power Sector To Give Relief To People: Nasrul

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said the government has been giving subsidy in the power sector as the purchasing capacity of the common people is yet to reach the expected level.

“We have kept lifeline tariff in the electricity for giving relief to the common people. We should not think about profit and loss for the REB (Rural Electrification Board),” he said at the closing ceremony of General Managers’ conference at the REB head office in the city.

Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus and Power Cell Director General Engineer Mohammad Hossain also spoke on the occasion.

The state minister urged the general managers of the REB to ensure good behaviour with the common people and get engaged in the development activities of the public representatives.

“It is necessary to take special initiatives to create awareness for ensuring energy efficiency and efficient use of power,” Nasrul added.

Urging the REB to reduce system loss by one percent, he said it would help REB to save Taka 150 crore.

REB Chairman Major General Moeen Uddin said some 80 units of Palli Bidyut Samity are providing services for 1.92 crore subscribers across the country. “At present 72 percent people are getting power facility from REB and the system loss is 11.44 percent. A total of 248 upazilas will be brought under 100 percent electricity coverage by December 2018,” he said.
