Sundari Trees Face Extinction Threat’

BBC

The Sundari trees of the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forests in the world, will cease to exist after 20 years due to detrimental effects of environmental degradation, said experts at a function on Saturday.
They were addressing an inauguration of a workshop on the global and local measures needed to offset the ills of environmental degradation held by at a city hotel.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Nature Conservation Management, BRAC University and ActionAid jointly organised the two-day workshop with a view to collecting expert opinion for setting a national agenda to counter the environmental degradation.
If counter measures are not taken by the authorities concerned, the particular tree species will face extinction after 20 years, the speakers said.
They said the people of the adjoining area will be subjected to physical, economic and social problems as a result of the extinction of the trees. Bangladesh is unfazed with the possibility to be worst affected by environmental change for its apparent failure to estimate damage to be caused by global warming and place the issue to the world forum.
About 50 developing countries will place reports to the world forum stating the loss to be incurred by them in December this year.
