Too Much Concern About Rampal Isn’t Desirable: Hasan Mahmud

EB Report

Dr Hasan Mahmud, the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of environment and forests said that, the Rampal power plant will be installed using latest technologies in every aspect, so there is no chance of damaging the environment of adjacent Sundarbans; so, too much concern about the Rampal power plant is not desirable.

Dr Hasan Mahmud said so in a shadow parliamentary debate on ‘environment safety on installing Rampal power plant’ that was organised by Debate for Democracy at the FDC on Saturday.

Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, the chairman of Debate for Democracy presided over the shadow debate program while, Prof Rubayet Ferdous, Rokeya Pervin Jui, Dr S M Morshed acted as Jury of the competition. Jahangir Nagar University won the debate over the Green University of Bangladesh.

Dr Hasan Mahmud said that, there are plenty of power plants in North America, Germany, Asia that are being built beside forests without harming it. Rampal power plant will be run by an ultra super-critical boiler and there will be enough recycling and purifier facilities to reduce the detrimental substances.

Installing such projects at a distance of 10 km from woodlands is considered environmentally safe at the outer world, he added. “And we’re installing the power plant at 14 km away from the outer boundary of the Sundarbans and 69 km away from the world heritage site,” he said. Coal will be carried by covered vessels as well, terminating the possibilities of air pollution, he claimed.
