We Are Trying To Solve Gas Crisis: Sheikh Hasina

EB Report

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said that winter sees some sort of gas crisis though the government took various steps for improving its supply. “I admit there are some problems but we are trying hard to mitigate the crisis,” she the prime minister while responding to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party MP Ziauddin Ahmed (Chittagong-9) during the PM’s question answer session in Parliament.

During winter, she said, natural gas gets concentrated slowing down its flow. “That’s why you’ll see the gas crisis during winter.”

The Leader of the House said gas is a natural resource and there is its limitation. “We’re improving the gas production, but the demand for gas is increasing substantially in line with the growing development activities,” she said. Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the government has decided to import liquid natural gas (LNG) to face the gas crisis as its alternative.

The prime minister also mentioned that the LNG terminal is being constructed and after the completion it would be possible to import gas. She said the government has strengthened Bapex as gas exploration activities are done through this organisation.

Talking about gas usage in households, Hasina said the government has waived tax on the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) to attract more investors in this sector. In another reply, PM said the government plans to construct 372 cyclone and flood shelter centres with Tk8.88 billion in flood and cyclone prone areas in the country.
