We want Electricity But Not Damage Sundarbans: Sultana Kamal

“We want Electricity too but not by wasting the Sundarbans”, said Sultana Kamal, conveyor of The National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans.

The National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans, which is a platform of 53 green organizations observed ‘Sundarbans Day’ and organized a rally in the city on yesterday where Sultana Kamal spoke.

Dr. Abdul Matin, Member Secretary of the committee and also general secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), CPB leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, BAPA joint secretary Mihir Biswas, Save the Sundarbans foundation chairman Dr. Shekh Faridul Islam and other prominent citizens and activists took part at the rally.

Sultana Kamal, the Convener of the National Committee alleged that the government is continuously spreading untrue and unacceptable information to defend the construction of the 1,320MW coal-based power plant at Rampal. The government is too much reluctant at the issue of Sundarbans, she added.

Earlier, on 14th February of 2001, organizations namely BAPA, Rupantor and some other local organizations have organized a conference to save Sundarbans where president justice Shahabuddin Ahmed was the chief guest. The participants of the conference had decided to observe that day as the Sundarbans day; from then the environmentalists have been observing 14th February as the Sundarbans day.
