63 Power Plants Shut Down Amid Gas and Fuel Crisis; One Adani Unit Also Offline

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka (Wednesday, April 22, 2026)

A total of 63 power plants—both large and small—have been shut down due to a gas and fuel shortage. At the same time, one unit of India’s Adani power plant has gone offline due to a technical fault. Altogether, power plants with a combined generation capacity of around 7,000 megawatts are currently out of operation. As a result, widespread load shedding is being reported across the country.
According to sources at the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), the country has a total of 136 power plants. Of these, nearly half—63 plants—did not generate any electricity on Wednesday. Most of them remain shut due to a lack of gas supply.
On average, about 250 crore cubic feet of gas is required daily for power generation. However, only around 94 crore cubic feet is currently being supplied for this purpose—less than half of the required amount.
BPDB sources also stated that, on average, about 1,481 megawatts of electricity was being imported from the two units of India’s Adani power plant. However, one unit suddenly went offline on Tuesday night due to a technical fault, reducing imports by approximately 700 megawatts.
Due to these combined factors, power disruptions are occurring in various parts of the country.
