All Quick Rental Power Plants Retired: Power Minister

Staff Reporter, Dhaka (Monday, June 22, 2026)

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has said that all quick rental power plants in the country have been retired. He said the government has taken various initiatives to promote renewable energy to ensure sustainable energy security in the long term.
The minister made the statement on Monday while responding to a question from Chattogram-15 constituency lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury in the National Parliament.
He said the government has set a target of generating 20 percent of the country’s total electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. Besides, there is a plan to achieve 10,000 megawatts of solar power generation capacity.
Currently, including imported electricity and on-grid renewable energy, the country has 137 grid-connected power plants in operation. As of May, the total installed generation capacity of these plants stands at 29,593 megawatts, which is sufficient to meet the country’s electricity demand.
