The government currently has no plan to provide new natural gas connections to the residential sector as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has become easily available.
Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud disclosed this information on Monday while responding to a question from Narsingdi-5 constituency lawmaker Md. Ashraf Uddin in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament).
The minister said that due to a decline in domestic gas production and continued supply shortages despite the addition of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), new gas connections in the residential, commercial and CNG sectors have remained suspended according to a circular issued on 23 July 2025. Currently, new gas connections are being provided only to power plants, fertilizer factories and specialized industrial zones.
He said the country’s daily demand for natural gas is around 3,800 million cubic feet (mmcfd), while the average supply during the period up to April of the 2025-26 fiscal year was about 2,654 million cubic feet per day. As a result, the country is facing a daily gas supply shortfall of approximately 1,146 million cubic feet.
